Well, Hey There!
Thanks for stopping by to find out a little bit about me and my writing journey! I’ll keep it simple…
I’m a former municipal government analyst turned picture book writer – not really a career change that many would anticipate, eh? My roles ranged from Ontario Works case manager, to the supervisor of our Housing Services Division and finally a policy advisor for housing and homelessness for our entire municipal region. I’m also Canadian which you wouldn’t likely pick up from my writing, but if we ever chat in person, I’ll be sure to wow you with my “eh’s,” my “hey buds,” and “oh yeah no fer sure’s.” 😉
It all started when my husband was offered a position at a California University which would be a difficult commute from our southwest Ontario, Canada home. So we decided to become ex-pats and bring our 3 year old (at the time) son with us across the continent. I was greeted with a very big surprise that the immigration process was slow at best and so I had to find something to keep myself busy while my son attended preschool.
Enter picture book writing! And rhyming to boot!
In the process of our move, our 8 year old Bernese Mountain Dog, “George” became ill and it became clear he would not be making the trip south of the border. We were devastated.
Once we landed in California, I finally had the opportunity to grieve my first born. Interestingly, my grieving came out as a rhyming picture book that parents could use to help their young children manage this complex event in their lives. It doesn’t have a publishing home yet, but that is hopefully soon to come!
From there I decided to join SCBWI and have met so many amazing, supportive writer/friends. SCBWI taught me so much and I am so grateful that they exist. From there I joined critique groups, have taken writing courses and I’m working on perfecting the craft. I’m excited to start querying agents this year and start collecting rejection letters (just a healthy does of reality right?).
What I can’t get over is how giving and supporting the children’s writing community is. It blows my mind! I feel like it’s been missing from my life for so long. I can’t believe it took me this long to find it but I’m glad that I have!
Other things you may find interesting; I’m a jock and also a crafting maniac. I play soccer, coach soccer and love the Portland Thorns, #BAON.
I love cross-stitching, string art and challenging myself to Pinterest worthy creations.
I also love any kind of Canada memorabilia and am always craving a Tim Horton’s Steeped Tea. Please send tea!
So that’s me in a nutshell. I would be grateful if you subscribed to my blog and follow me on my writing journey!
